What is Canasta?

Canasta is a classic card game that originated in Uruguay in the 1940s and quickly gained popularity worldwide. It's a game of strategy, skill, and a little bit of luck, played with two decks of cards, including four jokers. The primary objective is to form melds, which are combinations of seven or more cards of the same rank.

The Basics of Canasta

In Canasta, players aim to collect points by creating melds. The game can be played by two to six players, but it's commonly enjoyed with four players in partnerships. The first team to reach 5,000 points wins. Sounds simple? Well, there's a lot more to uncover!

Setting Up the Game

  • Use two decks of standard playing cards, including four jokers.
  • Shuffle the decks and deal 11 cards to each player.
  • Place the remaining cards face down to form a draw pile.
  • Flip the top card of the draw pile to start the discard pile.

Understanding Canasta Melds

Melds are the heart of Canasta. A meld is a set of at least three cards of the same rank. A Canasta is a special meld consisting of seven or more cards. Canastas can be either natural, composed entirely of the same rank, or mixed, containing wild cards such as jokers or twos.

Very addictive! But the AI cheats??? Within the first hand, one of my opponents (AI) put down all their cards, which resulted in a glitch. The next round, despite not having any merged piles, the same opponent picked up a card, discarded it, and went out... I tried to find a link in-game to report this glitch, but to no avail. I do really like this game, but I've seen some other glitches as well. (Ie opponent putting down two black 3's and a wild 2 as a pile... what's worse, this was mid game..)

Something wrong with the programming. Many times my partner could have picked up the pile and didn't, only to give it away on the discard.
